A New Chapter in Community Healthcare: Supporting Chicago’s Black-Owned Urgent Care

On Chicago’s South Side, something powerful is happening. Premier Health Urgent Care has become a symbol of what is possible when talented Black physicians invest their skills, knowledge, and resources back into the communities they serve. Founded by Dr. Airron Richardson, Dr. Michael McGee, and Dr. Reuben Rutland, the clinic was created to address a major healthcare gap by providing convenient, high-quality urgent care close to home for South Side residents.

For years, many families living on the South Side had to travel outside their neighborhoods or spend hours in overcrowded emergency rooms for medical issues that could be treated quickly in an urgent care setting. Recognizing this need, these physicians combined their experience in emergency medicine and trauma care to build a healthcare facility that puts patients first while keeping quality care within the community.

The impact of a Black-owned medical clinic goes beyond healthcare. It represents ownership, leadership, and a commitment to addressing health disparities by serving neighborhoods

that have historically had fewer healthcare resources. Patients can receive treatment from physicians who understand the community’s unique challenges while helping create jobs, inspire future healthcare professionals, and strengthen the local economy. Supporting Black-owned businesses—including healthcare providers—helps build stronger and more resilient neighborhoods.

Premier Health Urgent Care also demonstrates that healthcare can be about more than treating illness. The founders have spoken about their desire to improve community health and support efforts that address youth violence and long-term wellness through outreach and prevention initiatives. Their vision reflects a broader commitment to investing in the future of Chicago’s South Side.
